Halloween is my favorite time of the year. I usually like subtle accents in a few places in my home as a nod to a holiday or season. Halloween, I’ll admit I am a bit excessive. I love to make costumes, make décor, and to put together dramatic outdoor and indoor displays. Thank goodness Jet shares my passion, and Lily gets into Halloween too. She always talks about what she wants to be for next Halloween. Creating DIY Halloween Tablescapes is one of my favorite things to do. Keep in mind things that work for tablescapes work for bookcases, entryway tables, and coffee tables.

HALLOWEEN TABLESCAPE PLANNING:

When planning for my tablescapes, I like to pull together everything that I might want to use. I have an extensive collection for Halloween, so I bring up all my decorations and crafts that we have created. I always like to add some pieces with memories, for this will walk through the house looking for blacks, purples, and metallic small décor items. This year we put together a Halloween Door Décor that set the tone for our color pallet selection.

CULTIVATING A HALLOWEEN DÉCOR COLLECTION:

Developing a décor collection evolves over the years, and while I collect pieces that are unique and that you won’t see in your neighbor’s house. Some of my favorite places include Restore for used household items, thrift stores, antique shops, and fairs.

Dragon Eye Witch Book

Witch Books: Learn how to: DIY Witch Books so much fun to do with family or hosting a party with friends.

Candlestick Holders

Candlestick holders: Levels are critical when setting up tablescapes. Candlestick holders can be found in almost every thrift shop.

Potion Bottles

POTION BOTTLES:

Potion bottles are easy to make from dollar store bottles and empty bottles you collect from your pantry use during the year.

Mad Hatter Hat

MAD HATTER HAT

Made this a few years ago as part of Jet’s costume, and it is so distinctive I kept it for home decor.  We created the hat over a thrift store hat, using cardboard to make the hat’s shape.  Then I used some brocade fabric, a scarf, hat pins, and paper cards to finish it off.

Cups and glasses

CUPS AND GLASSES:

My collection of cups and glasses is very sentimental since most of them were passed down from my Grandmother’s.

HALLOWEEN TABLESCAPE IDEAS:

Here is a video how to: showing both the Mad Hatter Tablescape and the Witches Brew Tablescape

MAD HATTER TEA PARTY TABLESCAPE

Who doesn’t love a tea party? What about a Halloween themed tea party? Then it must be time…it must be time to have a Madd Hatter Tea Party. I look for opportunities to tell our story by displaying things that have a sentiment from the past. For this tablescape, the centerpiece is a Mad Hatter Hat that was Jets from the year we dressed up as Alice and the Hatter. I gathered items focusing on things with dark tones and metallics. I pulled out one of my bowls that I used to hold a floral arrangement from our wedding reception. I pulled in some wine glasses passed on to me from Grandma Craig and some silver cups from Grandma Atwood. The red vase and glasses were a wedding gift from Pam Freday. It is so fun to think about Halloween from the past. As you lay things out, I started with the hat as the largest piece and worked my way out with some medium pieces. Then I filled in the look with cups leaving some standing and tipping some.

Witches Brew Halloween Tablescape

Can you ever go wrong with witches décor? No, they are some of the easiest things to create DIY craft projects, and if that is not your thing, they are readily available at your favorite home décor stops. I have to give a shout out to Coming Home. If you’re in Utah County, they have unique things that you can pick up to use for Halloween and use beyond the season.
We gathered our DIY witches books, potion bottles, a dragon egg from Septarianville UT, an antique scale that I bought at the Roundtop TX antique fair for this display. The brown string of beads and the and door lock with a key we purchased from the local Coming Home shop. I found the spider while shopping in Mesquite, Nevada, to complete the look. You may recognize the metallic lantern from our DIY Moroccan Lighting project. We had two more lanterns that I regularly use for height and dramatic lighting in my tablescapes.

Tablescape tip:

I don’t like to clear my tablescapes for dining. We are a family of four, so placing the décor on table runners allows me to gently move on end down to open up the end of the table for us to sit. When we are doing a large group, I set up a buffet on the island to not have to move it. I try to keep the pattern open and the collection low enough to see who is sitting across from you.

TELLING YOUR STORY THROUGH DÉCOR:

These quick and easy refreshes to your interior décor refresh your room’s look and take you down memory lane. It is impossible to not think of loved ones and cherished times when you work with items that bring back touching memories. I encourage you to keep things in your décor closet with striking color, shape, and sizes and make sure they are as meaningful as they are beautiful. Please share ideas and pictures of your tablescape and entryways built with items that tell your home story.
