How did we end up with DIY lighting fixtures above our kitchen island? Just like you, we get inspired by projects we see on Pinterest. Jet and I love to take lazy beach bike rides behind our house by the lake. We have more bikes than people in our house. One day an artist friend of ours Pam Freday from OH sent us a Pinterest Pin featuring some fun bike gear pendant lights. All it took was one look to fall in love with the lights. We had the confidence to start this project because we just finished two lighting projects using pendant lighting kits from Home Depot.
Bicycle gears remove the middle of the gear to allow for room to string the pendant light kit.
Tips and tricks for your lighting project:
1. Don’t buy the gears from a Bike Shop (Unless money is no object).
2. Go to E-Bay there were many surplus shops with the Bike Gears.
3. Do go to a Bike Shop to help remove the middle of the gear to insert the pendant. (These were not easy to remove)
4. Use our favorite pendant light kit from Home Depot.
Add an Edison bulb and WHAAA….LAA! Stunning.
Build your electrical skills for lighting projects:
First is no need to be intimidated by lighting projects. Because there are many ways to build your knowledge and skill set. Watching some great instructional videos demonstrating “how to options” for DIY lighting is a great source on YouTube. If the electrical skills still scare you then look to partner with an electrician for a few hours. Finally, an electrician can help with the build and install. In turn, these partnerships can be a great way to build confidence and new skills.
These were a fun edition to show off one of our favorite hobbies in our home without an overbearing presence.
